Awakening to our Destiny

In our most quiet moments, each of us yearn for our lives to count for something more. To make a difference. To probe for a deeper significance in life. To discover the clarity of our destiny.
We are each born with a destiny to fulfill. The fulfillment of it as unique as each bud that unfurls. Each star that burns. Each snowflake that falls. And yet, it is a destiny beyond our mere selves.
It is a destiny that ultimately ties us to each other. To one great common purpose. Embedded into the fabric of our very existence, we are all called to the destiny of making the cause of the human race, the common cause for each of us.
That, I believe, is our true calling in life. To love. To honour. To work together for a common good.
It takes a new sort of bravery to live through the 21st century. We are brought to the heights of wonderment at man’s ability to invent. Simultaneously, we are brought to our knees by the depths of depravity the human mind is able to create. We are bowed down at the weight of calamity wrought by the hands of our fellow men.
Perhaps, there is no better time to awaken to our high purpose than – right now. The foundation we build our world on rests today on what we work together to build it up on.

This is the time for deeds. The time for words has ended. The wrongs in the world continue to exist because people talk only of their ideals and do not strive to put them into practice. Unless the goodness of our thoughts are translated into the world of action, they mean nothing.
As human beings, we tend to forget easily. If viewed from one perspective, that might be beneficial for our personal well-being. From another, we lose the opportunity to put in place the missing link so necessary for the lasting security and well-being for ourselves by failing to take action.
The furore in Boston. The furore in Delhi. The furore in Aleppo. The sparks of agitated furore all around the globe. I cannot in all clear conscience duck my head and remain oblivious or untouched by the events that have taken place around the world in just this past one week.
It has touched me in a deep, almost wrenching way. It has awakened the mother in me. The spouse in me. The very human-ness in me. Just as I believe it has in you. The thought of putting oneself in the shoes of the victims is a burden too great to bear.
What do regular people like you and I do in the aftermath of such shattering events? Where do we go from here? How do we make sense of this world we live in? What do we tell our children? What do we even begin to tell ourselves? Because, I am sure this will not be the last nor the worst of the storms we as a whole mankind would have to face.
What will we allow to shape our world today?
All this and more, I grapple with.
I believe the choices we make right now in the aftermath of such evident evils and tyranny will determine the future course of mankind in history. What we silently speak to ourselves. How we connect the dots. How we translate such acts of evil into the way we live.
“We do not veer off the rails in an explosion of error. We make a succession of uncorrected missteps, and then when we check, the good we would do seems far out of reach…. Depravity does not enter creation in a tidal wave of wrongness. It comes in as a slow, silent leak, drip by quiet drip until the earth is flooded…” ~ Desmond Tutu
It is so crucial that we do not leave the matters of global security only to the hands of our leaders. That is to shrug off our own responsibility which perhaps have a greater impact in the long run. Let us not be the silent leak which drip unnoticed in our apathy and indifference in the face of such challenging times.
“When we pay attention, it is possible to halt evil in its tracks.” Desmond Tutu writes in his book Made for Goodness.
I see the crisis which engulfs our world today as the birthing pangs in the evolutionary process of growth of humanity. Just as one observes in one’s life the tumultuous rite of passage one takes to reach maturity, these global events are showing us where we have gone wrong. How we address those crucial missing links is necessary for our development as individuals and as a world.
Far from signalising the end of civilisation, the convulsive changes towards which humanity is being ever more rapidly impelled will serve to release the potentialities inherent in man and reveal the full measure of his destiny.
To choose such a course of viewing our world is not to deny humanity’s past but to understand it. Far from a reason for despair, the state of our world today can be viewed as the unavoidable tumult which marks the collective coming of age of our human race.
Each block that we put in place requires the genuine civilisation of our character and the ennobling of our conscience. In light of what has taken place and continue to take place, anger, hatred and cynicism are very natural feelings. Indifference and apathy too.
But what shall we choose to build our world on after the grief and bloodshed? What will we allow to define us as a human race?
Destiny – the fulfilment of one’s true purpose. That purpose is peace and unity and no more hurting each other, please. Our one common purpose for all mankind.

in resentment, we are throwing the evil out into the world again,
augmented by our own reaction, but if we forgive the
wrong-doer we transmute his action into a test
by which our soul has been able to develop.

Interesting, Kakak Sharon. Very interesting. 🙂 I had this same thought quite a while ago. I was wondering if the first thousands of years of human civilization were full of direct guidance from God through Prophets and Holy Men, then, metaphorically speaking, human civilization was going through the stage of infancy. Like an infant that needs nursing, humanity needs direct guidance from God who spoke through the selected few. That is why our ancestors were given the Ten Commandments and the like. Now that the time for prophecy has ended, well, at least according to the Islamic tradition, I am tempted to argue that we, humanity, are entering another stage of life. Perhaps, teenage-hood? This is reasonably grounded given your argument above that we’re having such tumultuous phase of life before entering maturity. Much of teenage-hood is full of heedlessness, narcissism, and rebellion, right? It seems that such chaotic situation is truly necessary before we’re able to understand fully and are worthy enough to enter the World of Light.
The shell has to be broken first before we’re getting the pearl, right?
Aah I think you’ve nailed it! I admire your penetrating insights on the progressive revelation over the ages and the evolutionary state of humanity, my dear Subhan.
It is indeed wonderful to see that you have also captured the essence of this metaphor of the various stages of growth and where we are now at as a world. All created things have their stages in which they reach maturity. We look at nature and we see that there is a season and stages of growth found from a seed. The seed ultimately reaches the fullness of its “destiny” when the tree starts to bear fruits.
Similarly, there are periods and stages in the collective life of humanity. And as you so accurately diagnosed, mankind is now going through the turbulent age of adolescence. The birthing pangs is felt as we enter from one phase to another and emerge maybe a little battered and worn but hopefully also, a little more wise and a whole lot more mature.
The confusion, upheaval, and the cumulative evidences of disintegration marks the struggle we as a world are immersed in. Yet, it is precisely these earth-shattering and even alarming state of affairs which are acutely necessary for our individual and collective awakening.
The purging of such deeply rooted and overwhelming contamination is needed. For how else will we ever learn to see the evil and folly of racism, religious prejudice, nationalism, materialism which have held us captives for so long?
It is my deep belief that the answer lies in grasping the truth of Unity and the Oneness of mankind.

I must admit I am not entirely familiar with the Shaman’s journey, though it is my understanding that in most tribal and ancient cultures and beliefs, the awakening to one’s true purpose and the spritual journey it takes us marks the beginning of life, well-being and healing.
In order to bring healing to the world, we need to heal ourselves. In order to bring light, we need to know what is light and how to be that light. This power that you mentioned is indeed within us to choose to transmute darkness into light. Brokenness into wholesomeness. Despair into hope. Hate into love. What a wonderful tranforming power we have!

I think each of us have this wonderful destiny, not to be confused with fame and applause. Like the flower that blooms, the bird that sings, the seed that sprouts. We have been invested with so much. Each a unique trademark. Sometimes people ask “What is my destiny?” I would perhaps say the answer to that lies this second question “What can I best give of myself?” For in that lies one’s destiny.

We are indeed at the cross-roads of our civilisation. And all that we have built our world upon that is not based on truth but on oppression, prejudice, bigotry, ignorance, selfishness and corruption is starting to break and crumble. For how can falsity and weakness ever carry forward an ever-advancing civilisation?
It is sometimes painful to watch and bear the pain we inflict on ourselves and each other but sometimes learning and change have to come from such hard knocks. Said by someone who’s had a brush or two with that school 🙂

Thank you for a very impassioned post. Yes, there is a great deal of ugliness in the world, but I have to say that I believe there is less of it than say, 200 years ago. The collective human heart is evolving. The bad and the ugly reach us with unnerving ferocity because of our newfound interconnectivity but I believe humanity is progressing and reaching higher than it ever has. The few that pollute cannot match the hopes and dreams of the many who aspire. Indeed, there are vast numbers of ordinary people that recognize our innate goodness and its potential in us all.
Though they most often get swallowed up in the noise and violence of life, we are surrounded by small acts of heroism and kindness. Sadly, society tends to concentrate on the points of ugliness that threaten our stability rather than the many kindnesses that nurture and inspire us.
“Where do we go from here” you ask? I believe we must keep painting the orbit of our individual worlds with the light of goodwill. It is not a team effort. If it is to be authentic and far reaching, it must come down to the choices of individual hearts. There is great beauty in this word, much of it made visible by the small, kindly acts of simple, ordinary people. The few who try to destroy their benevolence with brutality may bring attention to themselves for a short while but “our one common purpose” has a weight and gravity that cannot recede.

I cannot begin to tell you just how much your comment means to me. For the insights and truths of wisdom it contains. And how far we have indeed come in the last 200 years! I only wish more of us have this knowledge for then we can actually see the adversity we have overcomed over the ages. And this should give us an indication of what we can possibly achieve as a human race. More importantly, the hope that is in store for us all.

We as individuals are powerless to change the world or our governments…I am convinced change must come from within each of us and as a collective we can make a difference, however small.

It is indeed a great travesty of justice when people use religion to feel superior over others. To condemn. To separate. To ostracise. To offend. The many evils that are done today in the name of religion distort the message of peace and concord and love which remain the unifying core of all faiths.
Which bring us back to the question of Destiny. True destiny is the fulfilment of one’s reality as a human being. Not to realise this great reality brings abasement to oneself and humanity. To kill or hate in the name of Destiny simply means not having awakened to one’s Destiny. For Destiny always leads one to life and nobility. Not darkness and death.

As painful as these events are, it is through them that I see the good in life too. Evil can only paralyze us for a few instances. Goodness and kindness always respond. People taking care of people. Have you read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren? I have read and reread the book several times. We all have a purpose given to us by our Creator. I don’t believe it is always a grandiose purpose, but our destiny none the less. I dream of a world where each of us wakes up with a purpose of how to better care for our family, our neighbors and our community. Maybe that is heaven?

I like to consider that many a Cause in past ages had been regarded as purely visionary, yet in this day has become accepted as noble and something to be preserved in our civilisation. Thanks for always bringing our attention back to these uncomfortable truths! We have to look them straight in the eye, confront them, and not turn our heads. “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than this.” If we just followed this commandment, it would solve a lot of our problems.

I keep using the word “insane” and “insanity” to describe our world and what is happening in every country on every level. I agree with you that our true calling is to love and honor each other and work together for a common goal. Unfortunately, when we have strayed so far from our purpose without an inkling that we are called to greatness and to love, hate, greed, and violence beget more of the same.
Change has to begin in each of our hearts. We have to inwardly feel and understand the connection we have to everything and everyone and I believe having that understanding is part of the healing journey.
The time for words has ended and it is up to each of us to reach out to others in true compassion and acceptance for our uniqueness and our differences. As I embrace others I trust that caring will pass on to them and they will pass it on to someone else.

I have been rather sloppy with my correspondence these last weeks. So sorry that I’m catching up on this end only now. Each time I send my post out into the great out there, there is a moment like one releasing oneself into the vast expanse. It comes in as a slow, silent leak, drip by quiet drip until the earth is flooded…” Thank you so much for sharing this passionate article that speaks to my inner mother and spouse. The horrors that send me hiding until I can come out again, remembering, knowing that every kind connection I can share with anyone is a step in the right direction, every letter and petition signed and sent, every smile, every feeling of love I can radiate can help obliterate some of the hate. I’ve heard it said that the energy of love is way more powerful that the energy of hate, and to send love – to really feel filled and shining with pure and highest love – can counterbalance the hatred of hundreds. Thank you Sharon for such an insightful and thought provoking post. I agree with many others who have replied and your responses. We each must take responsibility for our own evolution and growth and I believe in achieving this it brings a responsibility to shine that light on others.
A favourite saying…”I am only One, but I am One. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do”.
With enlightenment comes responsibility. We must lead the way, even if the way is hard, even
if it is dangerous. We are ultimately responsible for what our “leaders” do in our name. Hatred must be rejected by the light.
There has never been a time in history that has not called for sacrifices be made before the transformation of the majority has been achieved. We are at the forefront of this change. Who knows when the call to action will come? Ho will be ready to accept the call?

What a powerful post Sharon. Your caring, wisdom and guidance shine through for others to follow. I myself am often overwhelmed by the seeming acceleration of challenges, evil, duality.
